KOHLER C1 Traditional Indoor Sauna, Scandinavian Spruce — 2, 3 or 5 Person, Floor Optional

The KOHLER C1 is a traditional Finnish-style indoor sauna built around a freestanding FERO electric heater and natural sauna stones. Water ladled over the hot stones releases löyly — the soft burst of steam that defines Nordic sauna bathing, and the reason a stone-and-heater sauna feels different from a cabinet that only radiates dry heat. This is the Scandinavian Spruce finish: spruce on the interior walls, the exterior walls and the flooring, left light rather than stained, so the cabin reads as a piece of Nordic joinery rather than a dark box in the corner of a room. It is offered in two-, three- and five-person cabins, with or without the integrated floor, and arrives in pre-built sections that pass through ordinary interior corridors and doorways.

The bench is solid obeche with a matching obeche backrest, headrest and stool. The two-person cabin uses a 19" (483 mm) bench; the three- and five-person cabins use a deeper 22-7/8" (580 mm) bench you can sit well back into. Obeche is used on the contact surfaces for the same reason Finnish builders have always chosen low-density hardwoods there: it carries heat poorly, so it stays comfortable to sit on at full operating temperature.

The FERO heater stands free on the floor behind an obeche railing rather than hanging on a wall. Two- and three-person cabins use a 4.5 kW heater on a dedicated 30-amp GFCI circuit; the five-person cabin steps up to 9 kW on a 50-amp circuit to bring the larger volume up to temperature.

The cabin is insulated with 2-1/8" (54 mm) of mineral wool and joined tongue-and-groove through the walls, floor and roof. The entry door is 5/16" (8 mm) tempered glass on matte aluminum hinges with a rubber seal, and carries back-to-back 10-5/8" (270 mm) beech handles that stay cool to the touch. In keeping with sauna safety practice, the C1 door has no locking system of any kind — it opens from inside at any moment.

Heat is managed by a dual thermostat arrangement and a digital control panel that mounts externally on the front of the cabin, so the controls are set before entering and stay out of the heat. Because the panel is external, the sauna can be fitted into spaces that would otherwise be awkward. Aerotherm ventilation maintains air exchange inside the cabin during use. Lighting is indirect 2700K warm white behind the backrest. A wall-mounted thermometer and a beech wood 20-minute hourglass sand timer sit inside the cabin — analog instruments that need no power and do not fail in the heat.

The floor option matters more than it sounds. Ordered with the floor, the C1 installs on any level surface. Ordered without, it sits directly on the finished floor, and Kohler specifies cement, tile or another non-water-absorbent surface for that configuration.

Built for indoor installation, freestanding or in an alcove. Certified to UL 875 and CSA C22.2 No. 164. No plumbing or water supply required.

Site readiness

• Minimum 2" (50 mm) clearance between the sauna and any site wall, on all sides
• Minimum 8' (2.4 m) ceiling height
• Flooring must support the equipment weight plus dynamic loads — 58.9 lbs/ft²
• One dedicated GFCI circuit — 30 A for 2- and 3-person, 50 A for 5-person. Electrical work by a licensed electrician.
• Install indoors in a location with access to conditioned air
• Do not block natural airflow around the cabin, particularly near the fresh-air intake vent and the exhaust points
• For alcove installation or where a soffit is present, the room must be large enough for air exchange around the sauna, to prevent moisture accumulating between the sauna and the room walls. A fan is required on exhaust ducts longer than 12' (3.66 m) or using more than two elbow joints, and must not exceed 40–50 cfm.

Safety and care

Do not use the C1 cabin or heater outdoors — the C1 is designed for indoor use. Do not operate where aerosol products are in use or where oxygen is being administered. Use a towel or mat on the bench. If the sauna goes unused, run a heat cycle roughly every six weeks. Use only KOHLER aromatic extracts, approximately 10 drops per liter (0.26 gal) of water.

Warranty

Covered by the KOHLER Sauna Limited Warranty: five years on the sauna against defects in material and workmanship under normal residential use, from date of purchase or delivery, for the original purchaser, in the United States and Canada. Sauna accessories — whether included with the sauna or purchased separately — carry a one-year limited warranty. The warranty is void if the product is installed in a commercial application. Heater stones and electrician costs are not covered. Original sales receipt required.
